Cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase will introduce an encrypted chat feature between Ethereum addresses, provided the addresses connect to a single Extensible Message Transport Protocol (XMTP) backbone.

Director of product management Siddharth Coelho-Prabhu said that with the new feature, users will be able to port their dialogues to Coinbase Wallet from any XMTP-based application. The new functionality will give users the ability to gain the right to exchange private messages during transactions.

Coinbase is not the first cryptocurrency wallet developer to experiment with Web3 messaging, however, it is the largest scale platform using encrypted chat.

Coinbase Wallet is currently available in over 100 countries and has over 1.3 million users. The number of Ethereum addresses to which messages can be sent is even larger, as it includes all users of the Web3 Lens social platform.
