According to reports, the Federal High Court in Abuja has postponed hearings on cases brought by the local tax authority against the cryptocurrency exchange Binance Holdings and two of its executives. The reason cited is that FIRS (Federal Inland Revenue Service) has not been able to serve the charge to Binance’s Head of Anti-Money Laundering, Tigran Gambaryan, while he was in custody.
Hearings on Binance Holdings are postponed until April 8th, while the case against Gambaryan and Andzharvalley is scheduled for April 19th. It’s worth noting that Gambaryan was arrested along with another Binance executive in February, while Nadim Andzharvala managed to flee.
Binance stated in its blog that Gambaryan does not have the authority to make decisions in Nigeria and should be released from custody. Gambaryan’s wife filed a petition on March 30th for his return home.
Recall that in March, FIRS filed four charges against Binance, including failure to pay value-added tax (VAT), corporate income tax, non-submission of tax returns, and aiding clients in tax evasion.
